Educating a Child with ADD

If you are a parent who has a child with ADD then you know that your child is a creative, energetic, imaginative, and very resourceful kid. You probably would not change your child’s personality for anything in the world, but the same things that you love about your child can make it difficult for your child to sit still and listen in the classroom or at home. For your child, sitting still and listening is not only difficult, it is hard. However, there are some ways that you can do to help your child cope with their energetic spirit and learn.

The first thing that you can do is minimize distractions. If you are trying to teach your child something at home, or your child has homework, the best thing that you can do is make sure that your child is in a room with minimal distractions. Do not have them in the same room with their toys, a television or in a room where other children walk in a out of constantly.

You should also develop a routine. If your child knows what is coming up then they will better be able to contain their energy and focus. It might be best for them if you made up a chart of what you expect them to do everyday. Writing down what time they are supposed to do their homework will help them have a goal and a time to focus.

It might also be important to break homework time into blocks rather than one long stretch. If you feel that your child is growing restless, give a little bit of time to take a break and work off some energy before having them focus on their homework again.
